Communications Workers of America has renewed its efforts to convince Verizon to negotiate with its workers in a fair manner and to stop its union-busting efforts with a powerful new video that highlights the voices of Verizon workers. The video features numerous employees of the telecom asking for Verizon to do the right thing, Specifically, they ask Verizon to:

  • Stop exploiting tax loopholes while cutting medical benefits
  • Settle a contract with the workers
  • Stop outsourcing
  • Pay a fair share in taxes
  • Participate in society, support society, and support middle class jobs

CWA has a petition for those supporting Verizon workers:

From 2008 – 2010, despite billions in profits, Verizon paid no federal income taxes. Anyone that paid even a penny in federal income taxes paid more than Verizon did from 2008 – 2010. At the same time, Verizon is trying to destroy middle class jobs.

Tax evasion and union-busting are wrong. America needs a strong middle class, not corporate greed. I urge Verizon to stop trying to destroy middle class jobs and stop using corporate tax loopholes and dodges to avoid paying a fair share

Crooks and Liars has previously reported extensively on Verizon's anti-union tactics and the efforts of CWA and others to fight back. Verizon is a profitable company that is demanding extreme concessions from workers that are not necessary, particularly at a time when Verizon had a -2.9 percent tax rate in recent years.

More information and action opportunities can be found at CWA's Unity@Verizon website.

have been getting all savings oriented again in a fiercely competitive market. I'd like to repeat a question from your previous coverage however since I never got an answer the first time. How do you outsource cable installations and repairs over seas as you assert Verizon is doing?

you treat the installers as contractors, offer them the required insurance thru a subsidiary of your company, don't pay them squat, give no allowance for dead calls, rent the vehicles to them, little tricks like that; not saying they do it, but i wouldn't be surprised, it's done in other industries. it's what i would do if i was the big, bloated, running dog capitalist, which i am not of course, i remain yours truly, DTR.

i am pretty sure that by outsource they mean having 3rd party businesses take on aspects of verizon's business that used to be performed by verizon employees. which, from my sad experience, means hiring a local company that pays their workers less, offers little/no benefits, and performs a lower quality service. but, it allows the 'parent' companty save a lot of $$, and reduce headcount, all which it can trumpet to its shareholders

"They've hired men with their scythes so sharp to cut him off at the knee
They've rolled him and tied him by the waist serving him most barbarously
They've hired men with their sharp pitchforks who've pricked him to the heart"

which seems apropo, seeing as how these people are drunk with their own power. these corps. really, really need to be reined in, a negative tax rate? i'm sure they are threatening to out-source, don't they all? corporate person-hood must be abolished, and then any corp. that wants to do business in our country should have to prove their adherence to the principles listed above. it's either that or pull their charter.

The 'evil' socialist unions are attacking the 'Good' capitalistic job makers with there unfounded and unreasonable demands for a living wage and patriotic behavior at the cost of the bottom line prophets.

    Will it never end?

    .

Poor Verizon, forced to f*ck over their employees while raking in billions of dollars of profits, and millions of dollars of government subsidies. It's because of their "uncertainty" about the tax code, you know. Or Obamacare. Or...They're just greedy pricks who can never have enough - for themselves.

I wonder why those 45,000 workers don't form their own communications company and compete against verizon.

    Money.

More specifically, their lack of it, and the insane surfeit of it held by Verizon/Sprint/AT&T/etc.
